Uploading your files to Stuy

We will detail 2 different programs that you can use to copy your files from your home computer to the Stuy computers.

Moving your files with WinSCP (Windows only):

You want to upload (send) your files to your public_html directory on Stuy's computers because then they are visible to the world (and more important than the world...Mr. Brooks).
We are going to use WinSCP. If you want to use this tool and don't have it installed, you can get it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winscp/?source=typ_redirect
Launch WinSCP, and choose:
- File protocol: SFTP
- Host name: 149.89.160.101
- username: your username
- Password: your password
- press Login
Once connected, you'll see Stuy's directory's on the right and your home computer's directories on the left.
Navigate to your public_html directory on the right, and the directory containing the file(s) you want to upload on the left.
Highlight and drag the file(s) to be moved from the left (home) pane to the right (Stuy) pane. At this point you should see some activity occurring up in the "Status" area and you should see your files appear in the left pane, and you're done.

Moving your files with FileZilla (Windows, Mac or Linux):

NOTE: a few people have gotten one or another of the following types of malware after downloading FileZilla: PC Optimizer Pro and Binkiland. Among my students, only 2 or 3 have reported problems with these programs -- I've no idea why the rest of us have had no problems -- I apologize to those of you whose computers this has infected. If you have, here and here are websites with instructions on how to get rid of them. Instead, try the WinSCP program below, if you have Windows, to upload files.

Launch FileZilla, and type into the text boxes on the top:

In the Host box:: sftp://149.89.160.101
In the Username box: your username
In the Password: your password
In the Port box: 22

Press the "QuickConnect" button to connect to Stuy
Once connected, you'll see Stuy's directory's on the right and your home computer's directories on the left.
Navigate to your public_html directory on the right, and the directory containing the file(s) you want to upload on the left.
Highlight and drag the file(s) to be moved from the left (home) pane to the right (Stuy) pane. At this point you should see some activity occurring up in the "Status" area and you should see your files appear in the left pane, and you're done.

Publishing your files:

Suppose I've got a file called Fred.html that I'm dying to have the world know about. That file can be accessed through any one of several Stuy web servers, located in the various Stuy CS classrooms. here are two, valid URLs for Fred.html (assuming that my username is peter)
http://lisa.stuy.edu/~peter/Fred.html
or
http://marge.stuy.edu/~peter/Fred.html

Handing in homework to Mr. Brooks's homework server:

If you're supposed to hand in a web page (or web site), then compose and put and HTML link into the Comments-to-Teacher area of the homework submission slot. For instance, if you want to hand in the Fred.html as homework, write something like the following in the Comments-to-Teacher box:

Make sure that you don't forget the </a> at the end.
